FTP/POP3/IMAP/SMTP Access
POP3/IMAP
To access your POP3/IMAP account with Mythic Beasts tuschin.mythic-beasts.com is the server name and your username and password are as supplied when your account/extra mailboxes were setup:
- Main account mailbox: username is your main account username, password is your main account password
- Free additional POP3/IMAP mailboxes: username is of the form user@yourdomain.com with the password you specified when setting up the account.
- Paid-for additional POP3/IMAP mailboxes (obsolete): username is yourmainaccountusername-n (with n being the number of the pop3 mailbox, typically from 1 to 10) as the username and the individual password for that mailbox as supplied when the mailbox was setup (you can migrate these to free extra mailboxes - contact us for details).
You can also collect your mail via POP3/IMAP over SSL.
We run Courier IMAP as our IMAP server. You can find some notes about setting up your client at http://www.inter7.com/courierimap/README.imap.html. Note that due to the way that Courier works all subfolders appear under your INBOX folder.
Authenticated SMTP
If you want to send mail via our servers rather than your dialup/ADSL/cable ISP's server then we do indeed allow this but there are a number of things you must ensure you do in order to allow this.
- You should use mx.mythic-beasts.com as the server name.
- You will need to enable TLS (or secure connection) in your mail
client:
- For Mozilla/Thunderbird check the "TLS" button under "Use secure connection".
- For Outlook ensure the "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" option is checked.
- You may find that you need to use a different port for some mail clients or to avoid firewalls and you can try 587 and 465 if the default of 25 doesn't work.
- We require you to provide a username/password to the server in order to be able to send mail through it so not just any spammer can do so. Your main account name will not work for this; you must use an additional POP3/IMAP login (which you can create in the control panel), which will be of the form <username>@<domain>. Some times this is just a checkbox for "this server requires authentication" or similar.
FTP
We provide FTP access to allow you to upload your webpages, access your web logs and configure your email forwarding. Simply ftp to tuschin.mythic-beasts.com and login using your username and password. You will be placed in your home directory. This directory is where you should create the .forward files to control your email (see Mail). The subdirectory www holds your web site(s) (each in its own subdirectory eg www/<www.example.org> or, for a site which has been configured to point to the same content as another, with a symlink). www_logs contains the weblogs for your site(s) - one file for each day.
