Domain Transfers

This page documents the process of transferring a domain registration to us. If you are doing this in order to transfer hosting of your website and/or email to us, see our instructions on transferring your website and email to ensure there is no interruption to service.

The process for transferring domains between registrars differs based on the type of domain. The primary distinction is between UK domains, where transfers are initiated by the old registrar, and most other domains, where transfers are initiated by the new registrar. This page explains the processes and what you need to do in each case.

Transferring a UK domain to Mythic Beasts

For UK domains (.uk, .co.uk, .me.uk, .org.uk, .ltd.uk, .plc.uk) the steps you must do are as follows:

  1. Log in to our Customer Control Panel , and select the Transfer Domain link from the front page. You will be asked for the name of the domain.
  2. Instruct your current registrar to change the IPSTAG for your domain to "MYTHIC-BEASTS". It is vital that this is spelt accurately. Often this can be done using your current registrars' control panel.
  3. Once the transfer is complete, the domain will appear in your domain list in our control panel.

Notes:

  • There is no charge for transferring UK domains. If your domain is nearing its expiry date, you should renew it once the transfer is completed.
  • Transferring a domain registration does not change the nameservers. If you are using your old registrar's nameservers, you should switch to our nameservers as it is likely that your old service will be discontinued.
  • If you need to change or update contact details, please do so prior to beginning transfer, or after the transfer is complete; changes during transfer will not be saved.

Transferring a non-UK domain to Mythic Beasts

The process described here applies specifically to .com, .net and .org domains. Most other Top-Level Domains (apart from .uk) follow the same basic process, but there may be minor differences.

  1. Visit your current registrar, and ensure that the domain is unlocked and you have the auth code for it. Ensure also that the admin email address associated with the domain is still valid.
  2. Log in to our Customer Control Panel, and select the Transfer Domain link. You will be asked for the domain name you wish to transfer, the contact details, the auth code, and the one year's renewal fee.
  3. At this point your existing registrar is given the option to object to the transfer. They can do this only on procedural grounds (for example, if you owe them money). Typically, transfers complete within 1–2 days, but can take up to 7 days.
  4. Once the above steps are completed, the domain will appear in your list of domains in the Customer Control Panel.

Notes:

  • At the time of transfer, you will need to pay for one year's renewal. In the case of .com, .net, .org and other gTLDs (Generic Top-Level Domains) this will be added to your domain's expiry date when the transfer completes. For some other domains (.fr being an example) the year's renewal applies from the date of transfer.
  • Domains cannot be transferred within 60 days of their initial registration.
  • Transferring a domain registration does not change the nameservers. If you are using your old registrar's nameservers, you should switch to our nameservers as it is likely that your old service will be discontinued.
  • Domains should be transferred well in advance of the renewal date in order to avoid them expiring while in transfer, which could result in the loss of the domain.

Transferring a UK domain away from Mythic Beasts

In order to transfer a UK domain away from Mythic Beasts, you will need to know the IPSTAG of your new registrar. You should follow the instructions given to you by your new registrar. At some point in the process, they will ask you to change the IPSTAG for your domain. This can be done using Transfer Away option in our Customer Control Panel. When changing the IPSTAG, it is vital that you spell the new tag correctly.

Transferring a non-UK domain away from Mythic Beasts

The process described here applies to .com, .net and .org domains, but is similar to the process used for almost all non-UK domains. If you have any doubts about the process for other domains, please contact support.

The transfer away is initiated by your new registrar. Before you initiate the transfer, you should ensure that you domain is unlocked, and that you have the auth code for your domain. Your domain can be unlocked using our Customer Control Panel. The same page will give you the auth code.
